TRAD PANCAKE

Home of the Traditional Dutch Pancake. But What Does That Actually Mean?

When we say we are the home of the traditional Dutch pancake, we do not mean it as a nostalgic slogan. We mean it as a promise.

Because “traditional” is not just about an old recipe. It is about how something is made, how it is eaten, and how it fits into everyday life. And in the Netherlands, pancakes are part of everyday life.

It starts with the structure

A traditional Dutch pancake is large and generous in size. It stretches across the plate, thin but sturdy, with edges that are lightly crisp and a centre that stays soft enough to hold toppings without tearing.

It is not fluffy. It is not stacked. It does not rely on height to impress. It was designed to carry flavour, whether that is something simple or something bold. That base matters. Because everything else builds from there.

In the Netherlands, it’s dinner

For many Dutch families, pancakes are not a breakfast treat. They are dinner.

They appear on a weekday evening when everyone is home. One person stands by the stove flipping while the stack slowly grows. The rest sit at the table, deciding what to put on theirs.

That is the traditional context.

But here is where we are happily different: at DPM, you can eat them any time you like. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, late afternoon sugar craving, we are not here to police pancake timing. Tradition may have placed them at the dinner table, but we welcome you whenever hunger strikes.

The roll (when it makes sense)

If you grew up in the Netherlands, you probably learned early how to roll a pancake. Knife in one hand. Fork in the other. A drizzle of syrup. Maybe crispy bacon. Maybe just powdered sugar. Roll it tightly and cut it into pieces.

That roll is part of Dutch muscle memory, but only for the classics.

A thin pancake with a light topping rolls beautifully. A generously loaded pancake with bacon, eggs, vegetables or cheese? That one is best enjoyed with knife and fork, layer by layer.

Both are authentic. Both belong.

The toppings tell the story

Traditional Dutch toppings are simple and balanced.

Crispy bacon with syrup; salty and sweet together, not separate.
Cheese melted directly into the batter.
Apple baked into the pancake.
Raisins scattered through the mix.
Or simply powdered sugar or Dutch syrup on a plain base.

These combinations are not trends. They are habits passed down.

At DPM, we honour those classics  and then we build on them. We create generously topped versions, bold flavour combinations and loaded plates that go far beyond the basics. But the foundation remains the same: a traditional Dutch pancake that can handle it.

It is a ritual, not just a recipe

What truly makes a Dutch pancake traditional is the ritual around it.

The smell of butter in the pan, the waiting while the next one bakes, the choice of topping an d the first pancake that is always a little off but still delicious
It is informal. It is shared. It is uncomplicated. And that is exactly what we carry with us.

So why do we call ourselves home of the traditional Dutch pancake?

Because we start with the real thing.

The size.
The texture.
The structure that allows both a simple roll and a fully loaded plate.
The balance between sweet and savoury.

We respect where it comes from; Dutch dinner tables, family kitchens, and everyday evenings and we invite everyone to experience it in their own way, at any time of the day.

Traditional does not mean limited.
It means rooted.

And that is what we proudly serve.
